About

Tony Dixon is a professional boxer from Mountain Ash, Wales, who competes in the super welterweight division. He is the current Welsh champion and has a record of 14 wins and 4 losses. He is also known as “The Welsh Terrier” for his aggressive and exciting fighting style.

Dixon started boxing at the age of 11 and joined the Mountain Ash Boxing Club, where he still trains under coach Paul Paveltish. He had a successful amateur career, winning several national titles and representing Wales in international tournaments. He turned pro in 2013 and won his first eight fights, including a knockout victory over Mike Jones in 2017 to claim the vacant Welsh title.

Dixon suffered his first defeat in 2017, when he lost a close decision to Ted Cheeseman in London. He bounced back with two wins in 2018 and 2019, before facing another setback in 2019, when he lost a split decision to Maxim Prodan in Italy. Dixon did not fight in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but he returned to action in 2021 with a stunning first-round knockout over Francesco Russo in Bologna.

Dixon’s latest fight was in February 2023, when he defeated Lesther Espino by unanimous decision in Cardiff. Dixon showed his skills and power, dominating the Nicaraguan fighter from start to finish. Dixon improved his record to 14-4 and retained his Welsh title for the third time.

Dixon’s next challenge is his biggest one yet. He will face Pat McCormack on July 1 for the WBA Continental super welterweight belt. McCormack is a former Olympian and Commonwealth Games gold medalist, who has a perfect record of 5-0 as a pro, with all his wins coming by knockout. McCormack is considered one of the best prospects in British boxing and a future world champion.

Dixon is not intimidated by McCormack’s credentials and believes he has what it takes to upset him. Dixon said: “I’m ready for this fight. I’ve been working hard and I’m in the best shape of my life. McCormack is a good fighter, but he hasn’t faced anyone like me yet. I’m going to shock him and the world on July 1.”

Dixon’s coach, Paveltish, also expressed his confidence in his fighter. He said: “Tony is a special talent. He has power, speed, heart and determination. He can go all the way to the top. He just needs the right opportunities and support. This fight with McCormack is a great chance for him to showcase his skills and prove himself as one of the best super welterweights in the world.”
