Sunny Edwards, born on January 1, 1996, is a British professional boxer who has held the IBF flyweight title since 2021. Notably, he is the younger brother of former flyweight world champion Charlie Edwards.

As of February 2023, Sunny Edwards is recognized as the world’s second-best active flyweight by prestigious boxing organizations such as BoxRec, TBRB, The Ring, and ESPN.

In his amateur career, Edwards represented Repton ABC and later Steel City ABC. He achieved multiple national championships, including the ABA Juniors in 2013, ABA Youth in 2014, and the ABA Elite in 2015. He also earned silver medals in the GB Junior and ABA Elite Championships in 2012 and 2016, respectively.

Sunny Edwards began his professional boxing journey on September 24, 2016, with a four-round points decision victory over Sergey Tasimov in Estepona, Spain. He continued to impress with his first five wins, one of them coming by way of a stoppage.

On November 27, 2017, Edwards faced undefeated prospect Ross Murray for the vacant WBO European super-flyweight title. He secured a fourth-round technical knockout (TKO) victory. Edwards defended his WBO European title on October 26, 2018, with a ten-round unanimous decision (UD) win over Ryan Farrag.

In his next significant bout on December 15, Edwards faced Junior Granados for the vacant WBO International super-flyweight title. Despite a second-round knockdown, Edwards triumphed via UD, adding the WBO International title to his collection.

On April 27, 2019, Edwards made his second defense of the WBO European title against Pedro Matos, winning via eighth-round TKO. He then faced Hiram Gallardo on July 13, securing the vacant IBF International super-flyweight title with a UD victory.

Edwards transitioned to the flyweight division in pursuit of a world title shot. On September 14, 2019, he fought Rosendo Guarneros, winning by UD and claiming the vacant IBF International and vacant WBO Inter-Continental flyweight titles.

In a notable bout against Marcel Braithwaite on December 21, 2019, for the vacant British super-flyweight title, Edwards emerged victorious by UD despite suffering a knockdown in the seventh round.

Sunny Edwards successfully defended his IBF International title on August 29, 2020, by defeating Thomas Essomba via UD.

Edwards’s crowning achievement came on April 30, 2021, when he challenged Moruti Mthalane for the IBF flyweight title. Mthalane, a formidable champion, was on a long winning streak. Edwards, considered the underdog, won the fight by UD, with two judges scoring wide scorecards in his favor. This victory made him the IBF flyweight champion.
