Ash-Shakur Nafi-Shahid Stevenson, known by his nickname “Sugar” Shakur Stevenson, is an American professional boxer born on June 28, 1997. He has achieved significant success in his boxing career, both as an amateur and a professional.

Professional Career:

Stevenson has held world championships in two different weight classes. He was the WBO featherweight champion from 2019 to 2020 and the WBO super featherweight champion from 2021 to 2022. Additionally, in 2022, he secured the WBC and The Ring super featherweight titles.

As of June 2022, Stevenson is recognized as the world’s best active super featherweight by prominent boxing organizations and rankings, including the Transnational Boxing Rankings Board, BoxRec, and ESPN.

Amateur Career:

Stevenson’s amateur career was marked by significant achievements, especially at the youth level. In 2014, he won the AIBA Youth World Championships and the 2014 Summer Youth Olympics.

At the age of 18 in 2015, Stevenson emerged victorious in the Senior U.S. Olympic Trials, which earned him a spot on the U.S. boxing team for the 2016 Summer Olympics held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

During the 2016 Olympics, Stevenson showcased his skills and determination, ultimately winning a silver medal. He reached the gold medal match but was defeated by Robeisy Ramírez of Cuba in a closely contested bout. Stevenson’s performance earned him the distinction of being the highest-medaling male boxer for the United States, while Claressa Shields secured gold for the U.S. women’s team.
