About

Jorge Luis Linares Palencia, a Venezuelan professional boxer, has had an illustrious career, achieving world championships in three weight classes. He held the WBC featherweight title from 2007 to 2008, the WBA super featherweight title from 2008 to 2009, and the WBA, WBC, and Ring magazine lightweight titles from 2014 to 2018.

Linares displayed his immense talent early on, amassing an impressive 89-5 record as an amateur and claiming several national junior championships in Venezuela. At the age of 17, he made a pivotal decision to move to Japan upon the recommendation of WBA president Gilberto Mendoza. This move allowed Linares to turn professional earlier than if he had remained in Venezuela.

His professional debut, managed by the esteemed Teiken Boxing Gym, took place in December 2002, where he knocked out Kyong-Soo Chung in the first round. This marked the beginning of an incredible journey in the boxing world. Throughout his early career, Linares showcased his versatility, floating between super bantamweight and featherweight divisions while maintaining an undefeated streak.

In January 2004, at the age of 19, Linares fought for his first title, the vacant WBA Fedelatin super bantamweight title, against seasoned veteran Hugo Rafael Soto, emerging victorious via unanimous decision. He continued his rise in the ranks, winning the vacant WBA Fedelatin featherweight title in August 2004 with a hard-fought 10-round bout against Renan Acosta.

Linares faced various challenges during his career, including a knockdown for the first time in his fight against Jean Javier Sotelo. Nevertheless, Linares displayed his resilience and skill, bouncing back to secure a stoppage win.

Throughout the following years, Linares showcased his talents in different corners of the world, gaining experience and recognition as one of the most formidable fighters in the sport.

Jorge Luis Linares Palencia’s journey is a testament to his dedication, talent, and determination, making him a celebrated figure in the world of boxing and a pride for Venezuela. His remarkable achievements in multiple weight classes have solidified his place among boxing’s elite, leaving a lasting impact on the sport’s history.
