Edgar Luis Berlanga Jr., born on May 18, 1997, stands as a prominent figure in American professional boxing, heralded for his remarkable talent and prowess in the ring.

Early Life: Born into the vibrant Nuyorican community of Brooklyn, Edgar’s roots trace back to parents hailing from Puerto Rico. His boxing journey commenced at a tender age of 7, inspired by the legendary Félix Trinidad, a former world champion whose fights at Madison Square Garden left an indelible mark on young Edgar. Embracing his heritage, Edgar proudly identifies as Puerto Rican, expressing a deep connection to his roots and the island. His family ties to Puerto Rico remain strong, fueling his passion to represent them proudly, embodying the essence of Puerto Rico every time he steps into the ring.

Amateur Career: Starting his boxing career at the age of seven, Edgar swiftly made a name for himself in the amateur circuit, amassing an impressive record of 162 victories against 17 defeats, showcasing his exceptional skill and dedication even from a young age.

Professional Career: Edgar’s professional debut on April 29, 2016, marked the beginning of a remarkable journey. With a stellar record of 17-0, his early fights grabbed attention, predominantly due to his exceptional ability to secure first-round stoppages, a testament to his formidable power and skill. By late 2020, he was on the verge of breaking records for consecutive first-round knockouts, equalling the record held by Young Otto. However, his attempt to surpass this record concluded in April 2021 when he went the distance for the first time in his professional career against Demond Nicholson, securing a unanimous decision victory.

Continuing his ascent, Berlanga faced Marcelo Esteban Coceres in October 2021, overcoming adversity after a knockdown in the ninth round to clinch his eighteenth consecutive professional victory through a hard-fought unanimous decision.

Controversy and Redemption: The June 11, 2022 fight against Roamer Alexis Angulo sparked controversy when Berlanga allegedly attempted to bite Angulo’s shoulder, an incident unnoticed by the referee. Despite the incident, Berlanga secured a unanimous decision victory. His later comments, though intended as jest, drew criticism, leading to an apology and subsequent sanction by the New York State Athletic Commission.

Edgar Luis Berlanga Jr.’s boxing journey represents a tale of triumph, skill, and occasional challenges. His unwavering determination, coupled with his immense talent, continues to captivate the boxing world, promising an exciting future in the sport.
