Donnie Liboon Nietes, born on May 12, 1982, is a renowned Filipino professional boxer with an impressive record of accomplishments. He has held world titles in four weight classes, showcasing his versatility and skill in the ring.

Nietes has achieved significant success in his career, starting with the WBO mini-flyweight title, which he held from 2007 to 2011. He later claimed the WBO and The Ring magazine junior-flyweight titles between 2011 and 2016, followed by the IBF flyweight title from 2017 to 2018, and the WBO junior-bantamweight title from 2018 to 2019. His title reigns have solidified his place in boxing history.

One of Nietes’ remarkable achievements is his distinction as the longest-reigning Filipino boxing world champion, surpassing the record set in 1967 by the Boxing Hall of Fame inductee Gabriel “Flash” Elorde. This accomplishment speaks to Nietes’ exceptional skill and dedication to the sport.

Nietes holds a special place in the history of Asian boxing as one of the first three fighters from the continent to have world titles in at least four weight classes. He shares this distinction with fellow Filipinos Manny Pacquiao and Nonito Donaire, underlining his prominence in the sport.

Nietes earned the nickname “Ahas,” which means “snake” in Tagalog. This unique nickname has an interesting origin, as he gained it while working at the ALA Gym. His fearless interaction with snakes during his duties led to the moniker, which has become associated with his boxing identity.

From his early days as a utility man at the ALA gym to becoming a world champion in multiple weight classes, Donnie Nietes’ journey in professional boxing is a testament to his determination, resilience, and exceptional boxing skills. His legacy as one of the Philippines’ boxing greats is firmly established in the annals of the sport.
