About

Chris Billam-Smith, born on August 2, 1990, is a celebrated English professional boxer. He currently holds the World Boxing Organization (WBO) cruiserweight title, a remarkable achievement he secured in May 2023. Notably, in the period from 2019 to 2022, he also held the European, British, and Commonwealth cruiserweight titles at the regional level.

In his earlier years, Billam-Smith’s interest in boxing began to solidify when he was 16. He had an amateur career that saw him accumulate a record of 32 wins and 11 losses while representing Poole ABC. He even reached the finals of the ABA Championships in 2013 and 2016, although he narrowly missed the title both times.

Billam-Smith embarked on his professional career on September 16, 2017, under the guidance of Shane McGuigan. He made a powerful debut by securing a first-round technical knockout (TKO) victory over Russ Henshaw at the O2 Academy in Bournemouth, Dorset.

After maintaining an impressive undefeated record of 9 wins, including 8 knockouts, he faced another undefeated British prospect, Richard Riakporhe, for the WBA Inter-Continental cruiserweight title on July 20, 2019, at the O2 Arena in London. The fight was a part of the undercard for Dillian Whyte vs. Oscar Rivas and was aired live on Sky Sports Box Office. Unfortunately, Billam-Smith suffered his first professional defeat via a split decision.

On November 23, 2019, Billam-Smith faced Craig Glover, and this time, the vacant Commonwealth cruiserweight title was on the line. The bout was televised on Sky Sports in the UK and streamed on DAZN in the US, as part of the undercard for Callum Smith’s world title defense. Billam-Smith showcased his skills, securing a fifth-round TKO victory and the Commonwealth title.

In his first defense of the Commonwealth title on August 7, 2020, Billam-Smith faced Nathan Thorley and won with a second-round TKO, retaining his title. He then went on to face Tommy McCarthy on July 31, 2021, in a competitive bout that saw him emerge victorious by split decision, adding the British and European cruiserweight titles to his collection.

Billam-Smith’s journey continued as he successfully defended his European title against Dylan Bregeon on November 13, 2021, with a unanimous decision victory. In a rematch with Tommy McCarthy on April 16, 2022, he secured an eight-round technical knockout.

One of his notable victories came against Isaac Chamberlain, where he retained his Commonwealth and European cruiserweight titles with unanimous decision wins on all three scorecards.

However, the pinnacle of Billam-Smith’s career arrived on May 27, 2023, in Bournemouth, England, where he defeated Lawrence Okolie by majority decision to claim the WBO cruiserweight title.

Looking ahead, Billam-Smith is scheduled to make the first defense of his WBO cruiserweight title against Mateusz Masternak on December 10, 2023, in Bournemouth, England. His journey in the world of professional boxing continues to be a remarkable one.
