Shakur Stevenson to Defend Title Against Artem Harutyunyan in Newark

Shakur Stevenson is set to defend his WBC lightweight title against Artem Harutyunyan on July 6 in Newark, New Jersey. The fight marks the end of Stevenson’s promotional deal with Top Rank and could pave the way for his free agency.

Stevenson, an undefeated southpaw with a record of 21-0 (10 KOs), claimed the vacant WBC lightweight title last November with a lackluster win over Edwin De Los Santos. That bout set a CompuBox record for the fewest combined punches landed in a 12-round fight, disappointing fans who left before the final bell.

After the fight, Stevenson cited a hand injury and briefly mentioned retirement, but he later promised to deliver a more decisive performance in his next bout. He will face Armenian fighter Harutyunyan, who fights out of Hamburg, Germany, and holds a record of 12-1 (7 KOs). Harutyunyan is coming off a unanimous decision loss to Frank Martin last July in Las Vegas, where he was dropped in the final round.

This fight will be Harutyunyan’s second appearance on the world stage and first since a year-long layoff. Despite his recent loss, he proved competitive against Martin, who is currently ranked as ESPN’s No. 7 lightweight and is scheduled to fight Gervonta Davis in June.

Stevenson, ranked as ESPN’s No. 3 lightweight and No. 9 pound-for-pound boxer, returns to his hometown of Newark for the fourth time. He is a former champion at 126 and 130 pounds and aims to secure a marquee fight that matches his high skill level.
